Compton, California has birthed its fair share of artists who have gone on to make a mark in the rap and hip hop industry, but it’s Dr. Dre’s protege, Kendrick Lamar who has taken the industry by storm.
Through his storytelling abilities and lyrical prowess, his latest release, To Pimp a Butterfly, seeks to elucidate the current state of black consciousness and liberation in his most combative effort to date. The album has instantly become a classic in hip-hop circles, but has also — on a larger scale — become a portrait of race dynamics in a post-Ferguson America.
The first major tell of his brand of black liberation was the album artwork. Perhaps it goes further to suggest that black men already covet the white woman, a la Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. In the jazz-laden track, the woman represents the pressures and expectations that white America places on the black man.
This choice would have been better executed had Lamar personified his issues with an actual white man to portray what it seems he was truly trying to say. Part of that struggle being the attempt to exist outside of these stereotypes. It speaks to the underlying misogyny that many marginalized men black, gay, etc. No doubt many black men deal with the expectations of taking care of the women they may be dating and having to work harder than other men — mainly white men — to be half as successful and valued, but for an album that is being touted as a great reflection of racial oppression it does so at the expense of black women.
By naming sexist oppression as a problem it would appear that we would have to identify as threatening a group we have heretofore assumed to be our allies — Black men. I must admit that my bias against the hyper-masculinity displayed throughout the album threw me off at points — not unlike the hyper-masculinity that categorically finds a place within hip-hop and the black community on a larger scale.
There is no denying this emasculation and adherence to an inherently misogynistic system is why rappers often refer to themselves as wielding power through the metaphorical use of their genitals.

That brings us to his most recent release To Pimp a Butterfly, an intentional reference to To Kill a Mockingbird — appropriate, given the racially-charged content of the album. The anticipation was cultivated almost tenderly, with singles dropped periodically and the release date left unannounced until three weeks before the official launch date — March 23rd. The single is inundated with confidence and optimism, self-love that can only be forged in the smithy of racial empowerment.
Layers upon layers of historically black musicality in every song; a cacophony, if not for the masterful way in which brass, wind and bass weave together. Accidentally released March 15 on iTunes, it was fully released on March 16th, taking many fans by surprise and setting a Spotify record with 9. But the last track of the album demands a paragraph of its own. Not unlikely scenarios given the backdrop of continued, arguably escalated, police brutality against black people and people of color.
